  1. #1 New Scarlet dead after 20 hours...
    Hello everyone,

so there it is... my camera died right away and I'm a bit panicked, although I know it happens, and I hope RED will solve the situation soon and get me a new one. I don't really know what happened, I was on my first shoot, the camera was treated extremely well, and was either in my hands or in a pelican case. Suddenly, while shooting, the screen displayed a "recording error" and the camera had to shut down. When rebooting it, it started normally... we rolled, and there was the same error again. We decided to take a break, let the camera cool down. After a couple of minutes, we started the camera again. It worked, but the touch screen was not responding. We were almost done for the day, so we decided the wrap.

I went home, turned the camera on, and everything was fine! Working perfectly. I even managed to switch the new firmware, record in different resolutions etc...

The morning after, we arrived on set, the camera started but the touch screen was not responding again. I tried to reboot, and the camera never booted again. I put the redvolt in, the red button lights up, I press it, the fans start, but the button stays yellow and doesn't boot. It never went past that stage again.

Have you ever experienced something like that?

I have one question though to you guys : I ordered the camera in the end of june, on RED website. I live in europe, so it was shipped to Pinewood. I went to collect it myself there... the camera's number surprised me : #0944

I see a lot of people getting #2XXX Scarlets, so I'm a bit surprised to have such a low number. Is there any chance it was a refurbished camera? Can they do that?
I don't know, I guess I'm just being nervous after investing so much money into it. I hope it gets solved soon! Any comments/idea is welcome! Thanks!

The number means nothing.. Did you try rolling back to a really early firmware that is proven to have few problems? You should never use the beta firmware on a job. Doesn't sound like your camera died, just sounds like the firmware your using is not that happy..

Did you try with other media cards when it first said recorder error?
You may want to force upgrade the firmware in order to reboot it.
A would assume, and anyone from RED or RED europe can tell me that I'm wrong, the possible reason you have a low number (under 1k) might be that early production run they send out a batch to europe at a time. And that's why it 944, even though there about 4k+ scarlets out now.

Can't help you with your camera problems, but I am certain yours is not a refurbished unit. Chalk it up to shipping and customs delays.

    Yeah, that's a forklift tattoo. I wasn't always a cinematographer :)

I didn't use the beta one (3.3.3), but the latest official one (3.2.19).
I totally agree on not updating the firmware while on a job, unfortunately, we were having these recording errors that where completely preventing us from shooting. So I guessed it was a risk worth taking, and I was wrong ...

(I became paranoid after that incident)
I will try that. It's weird it worked so perfectly after I installed it though.

One more detail : the installation of the 3.2.19 was supposed to take up to 45 seconds with fans at full speed, according to the documentation. When I upgraded, it only took about 10 seconds (max). Is that a clue that something might have gone wrong? Or is it that quick for you too??
