I have a question, how can the new Retina Macbook Pro playback a 4k mov real time but my 8 core mac pro can't do it without stuttering and skipping? I can playback fine in fcp and premiere or RCX but the 4k mov in quicktime always stutters.
My setup is:
Mac Pro 2x2.26 (8 core)
nvidia gtx 470
all latest updates for software and OS running Lion.
Final Cut pro X its still the same software as before with many things i don't like, but it cuts 4K Prores 444 natively, realtime. Threw some random effects like bleach bypass and runs like a champ. Very, very impressive. And it takes advantage of this display... Just gorgeous. Adobe, please do the same!
FCP X is interesting, just for fun I tried a 9K timeline 4 x 4.5K prores and it works.
did you achieve the 9k resolution with the Compound Clip - Open in Timeline , etc. work-around?
Because I know FCP X doesn't have custom resolutions, but there is a work-around for it (that is detailed on Creative Cow, and I used it successfully to have a 11K timeline once), and just wondered if you used the same method or there was something else?
So you got 4x 4.5k Prores playing back? Nuts.
I created the custom frame size through the motion export and then compound clip method. Yes playback works in FCP X. Exported 10 sec prores clip is 2.2 gb. Doesn't playback so well in quicktime though.
