Our very 1st RED ONE prototypes, Boris and Natasha, were just completed. Peter Jackson had offered his interest from the beginning.

I called Peter to ask him who he would recommend to shoot some tests in Hollywood of our 1st cameras. His response was "fly to NZ and we'll do the tests".

So off to NZ we went. Peter shot "Crossing the Line" in 3 days. We showed it at NAB a week later.

Soderbergh saw "Crossing" and told us he "was all in" to shoot Ché on RED. That was months before we shipped the 1st customer's cameras. Ché was shot on prototype RED ONEs.

Soderbergh told Fincher. Fincher shot "The Social Network" and the "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" on RED. Fincher told Wolski (Pirates). Wolski told Schwartzman (Spider-man). Wolski also told Ridley (Prometheus).

The Hughes Bros. saw "Crossing" and shot "Bool of Eli" with Don Burgess. Don then shot several features, including "The Muppets" and "Flight" on RED.

Jeff Crowenweth shot with Fincher... then shot "Hitchcock".

And on it goes... word of mouth. Feature after feature.

"The camera is arguably one of the most important of all inventions… it is the single tool that has the ability to stop time, record history, generate art, tell stories, and communicate messages that transcend language like nothing else ever conceived."

"Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..."

Word of mouth always is the best thing, you are not selling anything, people are just making recommendations based on their experience, the best!!

This is how it should work. It works for RED - it works for me too.

Cheers to JJ & RED for a well deserved success!

PJ and Burgess seem to be the Big links in that flowchart. Couldn't ask for better people to pass the word around.

Early adopters among the higher professionals must have given the RED team verification of the concept and spurred you on to do better, faster. But I believe you would have been just as successful if you had not had those celebrity endorsements... only it would have taken longer.

Some of your customer base may have bought because of who was using and testing your cameras but most of us bought irregardless of who was using and testing RED cameras. I think for me, knowing that the people you mentioned were early adopters raises my esteem for them more than it serves to make the RED cameras more attractive.

But I can see where a camera owner would benefit from dropping those names when trying to land a gig for their camera.
One camera is a shoot... two or more is a production.

Great bit of history there with some legendary characters. Not that its worth noting in the history books (yet ;) but "crossing the line" also was the very moment i pulled the trigger. Look forward to seeing this timeline evolve Jim. Have a good weekend. Haskell.

Me too, as I am sure was the case with many. I walked out of that theater and ordered my first of four Reds.

what, no milk girls? what brief RED history could possibly be representative without the milk girls?

one picture sold me two cameras and changed the course of everything.
