People have begun uploading 1080p movie trailers to youtube as 4k clips just to make a few bucks on ads. Here is one example. They even go so far as to turn off comments so people can't call them out on it. Even more pathetic is that not only are people now linking to them in lists of 4k clips available online, they are giving them good ratings.

It would be great if Red could make a site for high quality 4k trailers as apple did years ago for 1080p ones. It would be really sad if this problem causes people to come to the conclusion that 4k looks just the same as 1080p and skip watching the 4k version of The Hobbit and other movies in the future.

I hear you, but let's just stop for a moment and consider that people don't have 4K computer monitors to begin with. So someone watching a 'real 4k' video on YouTube isn't anyway. The comprehension battle is already lost if anyone thinks they are watching 4K on a 1600x1200 monitor.

I posted this out of frustration trying to find things to watch on my retina MacBook Pro. There are tens of millions of people with 2560 x 1440/1600 monitors and already probably a few million more with 2880 x 1800 ones.

We could put away the whole conversation if everyone knew that, but there are those out there, everywhere, that will look at the you tube video and say well it's no different that 1080, or its no different than my iPhone, or 5dMII. The world is full of those types. And then there is the compression on the inter webs, and the non 4k monitors. So yeah we have some difficulties to overcome for the next year or maybe a little more. But soon enough 4k will be everywhere.

4K delivery from YouTube doesn't have any more real or resolvable detail in it than their 1080p content. But yeah, there are issues with what people are uploading and issues with what YouTube is doing. All falls back on YouTube, complain to them.
