    So my local camera shop has the Canon 10-22 used for $600. Tried and it looks very sharp and wide on the viewfinder, but is a bit slower than the highly respected Tokina 2.8. Any thoughts on which would be the best bet for a Scarlet?

    The Tokina is better. Sharper, brighter, better contrast.

    I just feel like the zoom is backward.

    I've owned both. Biggest downside to the Canon is the variable aperture. Go with the Tokina. You'll thank yourself.

    I have to say i really like the Tokina 11-16 PL from Duclos. I have a love hate relation with it sometimes....and it's been over a year since i've used it now that i'm using far more fisheye lenses....that said, everytime i whip it out and shoot with it i just love it. Topside is remarkable. But underwater not too bad. Here's a few frame grabs to jpg--sorry they are not full rez and on a place i can add a link---uploading here does NOT do them justice.

    These shots were taken using Epic @ 23.98 @ 5k HD

    i have both, when there is enough light i prefer Canon, it's noticably wider, but for low light Tokina is a winner,
    i also have Sigma 20mm f/1.8, although it's not wide enough, but if there a room to step back it works, i love that lens, it's very sharp and it's also macro;
    i can shoot side by side, what do you want to see

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts. After posing this question, I happened to see what Ken Rockwell wrote about both lenses, and it seems, for optics, he thinks the Canon is superior. But I certainly understand the desire for a faster lens when using Scarlet.

    They are dififerent lenses. The Canon is perfectly fine for stills the Tokina is very good for Motion picture and Stills. If you can get a Cinevised version of the Tokina from Duclos.

    Just a side-note, the Tokina has been upgraded this year with a aspherical element, new coating and better AF-motor. It's name is AT-X 11-16 f/2.8 PRO DX II and it should start shipping by the end of this month for Canon mount, the Nikon-version is already available.
