  1. #1 EXORBITANT TRANSFER FEE!
I find it distasteful indeed to have to pay $750. just to be able to download a firmware update. And we cannot do this because it is not "registered" yet in our name.Yes, I know Red will "inspect" it and give me a 90 day warranty, tell me it isn't stolen, etc. etc.
We don't want an inspection, and We don't care about a 90 day warranty.

All we need is that someone somewhere TYPES IN our name as being the new owner, so we can have a simple download ---And for THAT, no one in this world should demand such an exorbitant fee!

I have to disagree. I love this feature. This mean if someone steals my Epic, he's stuck in that firmware until he reveals himself. You probably got a great deal in that red one. 750 dollars is not even enough to buy a 7D. Just think about it : with this extra you'll be a legitimate, registered red owner, and if someday someone steals your camera he will be in a similar situation to the one you are- and you'll e a lot more happy :) .

I am aware of the theft protection, and want that.
So then if we pay good money for a Red One, which is not at all a stolen item, but do not pay $750. to "register" we are somehow not "legitimate"? We are somehow "second class" users or something?
    How silly.

As I said, that much to just TYPE IN a NAME CHANGE is unreasonable, if that is all we want.

    How about TWO options:
    1. Simple name change (low fee) This of course helps against theft.
    2. Inspection, warranty, etc. (current fee)

Guess what I am trying to say is that when we spend money, we expect to get something a little more tangible. Ninety days means little to some of us, and an inspection if we don't need it is nothing, and simply to change a name in a data base is not that involved.
Maybe I am missing something here. But I am looking, just can't find it!
    Sorry.

It's kinda like complaining about the cost of registering a car at the motor vehicles bureau.

750 bucks, is not that much money, especially after having just paid more than $10,000 to own a R1. I know it sucks, but complaining is not going to make it suck less, in fact it's just the opposite, it makes it suck more...

seeing how the Red One hasnt seen a FW update in awhile, why dont you just get the seller to install the latest version and call it a day.

It's hard to be sympathetic when this policy has been adhered to and known for quite awhile. Simple research, and the resultant knowledge of what it is you were buying, and the terms of purchase, would have allowed you to make the informed decision which, apparently, you didn't do. And, to be honest, does a non-profit really need a RED to do it's work? Just one person's opinion but you might have served the organization better buy investing in a simple set-up at a lower cost. I can't help but wonder, what was the motivation for investing in such a high end camera?

    I agree with the OP.
I went through an unnecessarily complicated and very expensive process to have a couple of accounts (cameras) switched during my Epic upgrade process.
I won't go into all of the details as it's a bore but I fail to understand why this process is overly complex and expensive.

Think of what would happen if RED didn't inspect and verify the camera before transferring ownership and "typing in the new name". People could get stuck with lemons or stolen cameras.

Someone has to verify that the camera Owner A is selling to Owner B is one that is fully functional and rightly their own to sell, and not a stolen one.

With the cheap "low fee name change" system, I imagine spammy people sending emails to RED saying "Alex Thomson sold Scarlet #2098 to me" and when the actual owner tries to update, I get locked out because someone else spammed the system. Without physically inspecting the cameras, how could RED know that the camera is or isn't functional and/or stolen?

While I do see the OP's point, the value of the RED transfer system is that it's insurance for the larger investment, the actual camera body.
