It seems many apps, when launched at start-up, are causing OSX Mountain Lion to intermittently go into a "black screen of death" after logging in. Lots of reports popping up in various discussion forums, including Apple's support forums. No recovery from this other than to force a system shut-down and restart, hoping that it won't happen the next time. I can confirm that RED Watchdog is triggering this behavior. As of right now, it seems the problem is with OSX, so hopefully Apple will have a fix soon.
Seems to be extra bad on the retina MBP....
