REDucation UK is gearing up for our early Sept. Class at Pinewood. from Sept 3rd to Sept 5th, right before many of us head to IBC in Amsterdam.

We will have EPIC and Scarlet packages for each shooting group, and cover much of the key learning of Camera and Post Production for getting the most out of your RED footage, for maxium grading ability and ease of workflow for both Television and Big Screen Movie shooting. One of the class groups will also be shooting EPICs in 3D mode, using the same 3Ality Technica gear that the Hobbit, Spiderman and Prometheus used.

Over the last few REDucation classes in Hollywood and India we have done some interesting experiments in the class, that have worked out really well, and I'm planning on incorporating much of that in our upcoming UK class. On Day 3 of the class, we do a full on DIT workflow, where the students shoot, round Robin style and move the Red RAW files onto on set systems, both Mac and HP towers with Red Rocket cards and Mac Laptops with portable Thunderbolt adapters for RED Rocket cards. they prep the files for delivery, do the initial grade and export out the files for dalies and editorial, just like what happens on many movie and TV sets all around the world shooting RED.

We also do a demonstration of "no render" post workflow, where we take RED footage, create the ProRes or DNX HD in real time as the students are watching, then do a quick cut of that footage and show a conform and DI grading session using one of the many DI systems that handles RED footage natively without the need for any transcoding to another file format. It worked so well to show all this on the big screen as it was happening for the class that I really want to add this as part of our classes now.

Michael Cioni, the Founder of LightIron Digital will be teaching this REDucation UK class with me, he teaches the ones in Hollywood with me all the time, and it's a real bonus when he's free to do the class. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, considering his company has worked on many of the biggest movies in the world shooting on RED ONEs and EPICs in both 2D and 3D.

I know that there is only a limited amount of space for the UK REDucation, so if you are interested in coming, please visit

    http://www.red.com/learn/reducation/...september-2012

and register in the next week or so if you can, so we can hold a spot for you.

    Thanks.

    + Ted

Pinewood Studios are polishing the floor of the Ball Room - It's a great place to hold this event, but as Ted has said, spaces are limited...
Looking forward to meeting more of our European RED folk..

As I've been watching the Olympics it's hard to believe I'll be in London in just a few short weeks! -But I keep thinking about how excited I am to come visit and be a part of REDucation London 2012!
I will be team teaching with Ted at the upcoming REDucation London and will be bringing a lot of new and practical information for RED Users of all levels.
I'm going to be focusing my discussions a slightly new topic this season:
    IMPROVING YOUR EXISTING WORKFLOWS

Everyone has workflows they are comfortable with. But all of us (myself included) can benefit from shaving off a few minutes here, a few hours there, etc., by being open to workflow improvement.
In the past, we focus on information and options relating to functionality. This will be different. I am going to spend a lot of time with case studies - both Hollywood movies and TV shows as well as independents. Since both ends of the spectrum can borrow so much from each other, I will be using these case studies that demonstrate how you can create your own optimized workflow using equipment you probably have access to. The key goal for my REDucation this year is to give attendees as many options on improving their workflows so that they feel like they can command the process even better than they already are. Some elements of workflow improvement we will focus on are:

+ increased download/offload speeds from SSDs
+ increased dailies transcoding speeds without expansion chassis
+ improved plans for archive and backup strategies
+ improved functionality for REDCine-X Pro conforming
+ deeper understanding of RED color science
    + best options for mastering/outputs

The most common thing that holds people back from enrolling in REDucation is the fear that "experienced RED Users would be wasting money on a 101 curriculum." I have personally asked attendees of past classes to bust this myth so you can hear it from former attendees. But the fact of the matter is everyone leaves with a massive increase in understanding of the process. REDucation broadens your horizon, widens your understanding, and still gives you time to get up close and personal with precision camera and post work. The resources in terms of Q&A as well as 4K review are unparalleled...perhaps to the point that we do our best to "spoil" those who take this class, which is the way learning should be.

If you're on the fence, let me encourage you to ask questions so we can put your mind at ease. It's taking a tremendous amount of resources to bring this show to London, but we're excited to be coming and I'm excited to see all my European friends.

Very happy to have you coming back, Nick and for anyone on the fence we have some great new additions to REDucation that we will be bringing to the UK edition including 3D shooting exercises, an iPad exercise Michael will be leading connecting Adobe Media Encoder with the Light Iron Server and a full afternoon of onset data management training.

Look forward to seeing you all in a couple of weeks.
