just that, I have a zoom h4n and am interested in upping it one level. two channels is fine, 4 would be better but not critical. would like something with quality pre amps as i will not be using an external amp. needs to have p+48. otherwise pretty simple. dont need a huge amount of features. i will be capturing tracks individually not mixing or anything. would like it to have either SSD or CF/SD recording for media.

These are budget recorders. They can work fine for many situations. But if you want great sound, it really starts with Sound Devices. Even running a SD mic pre into one of these will be far better solution. These recorders can get the job done, so if money is an issue, have a look at them. But I would seriously consider the Sound Devices 702T

Michael ... I asked about the same question when I upgraded from a zoom. 100% agree with Steve, what I did was go with the a 744t eventually, after wasted some money on the "semi-pro" stuff. The 744t is an upgrade to the 702t, either of these allow for professional sound for corporate shoots and indie film where there are not a lot of mic's needed. This also allows entry to the world of timecode.

Do you already have a mixer? In my opinion something like a used SD302 would be my first upgrade before a new recorder.

Does anyone know if either the 702T or the 744T transmits timecode or do they only receive timecode? I'm thinking about options to use with the timecode buddy, since the Scarlet doesn't transmit any timecode itself.

744t is both transmit and receive(has a real nice jamming interface too, also is good for recieving from one of those new clackers). If my memory is right ... i think the 702t is one way (can't remember which).
