Zaxcom Nomad all the way. It won the CAS 2012 Technical Achievement Award. It's a combo recorder/mixer. You can start with the 4 channel model and if you want to add more channels later you can upgrade to 6, 8 or 12 channels by sending in your Nomad and paying the retail price difference plus $300.

thanks, i was feeling the 702 was the next step, a big one. i agree that 1000 dollar options would just be prosumer.

also with the sound devices is it better quality components and there fore sound with the higher end models or just more channels and time code? it doesnt look like they do anything prosumer.

any one familiar with the roland r-44 or heard any feedback about it?

Interested in the timecode mischef as well... Really wish to see the workflow other guys are using to record synced audio. I might do a couple of interviews and really interested in this. Thanks.

I wish to record in a workflow with timecode not sync everything afterwards with software.

You could hook your mic(s) up to a MixPre and run a mic level output from the MixPre to your Epic/Scarlet. Then you have nothing to sync at all... but you also don't have a backup if something goes wrong. You could also do this with a higher end recorder as well and then you would have a master audio recording to go back to if you wanted/needed to.

I would have nothing to mix becuase the sound would have been recorder through a proper mixer if I understand correctly. This would give you the proper recording controls for audio and straight into the scarlet's audio right?

    Thanks.

I asked because a lot of people here talk about time code - I guess this would be necessary if I ahve to recorder more than 1 channel of audio
    Thanks.

Excuse my questioning - Quite a starter in audio.

For the interviews you are talking about you really should have a professional recording sound. They will know what best to do to meet your needs. If you are worried about having to later sync the audio you can have them run a MIC LEVEL output from their mixer to your Scarlet. They will need to set the proper audio levels on your Scarlet as well. The live audio can be sent to you through a cable you keep attached to your camera or wirelessly.

Timecode is usually also used. Simply the time code of the video recorded by your Scarlet is synced to match the timecode of the audio that is being recorded by the sound recordist. Since the numbers match this makes syncing the audio in post very easy. Here is a video on how to do it in REDCINE-X Pro: http://www.red.com/learn/workflow/audiosync
