The Dragon sensor will be identical in the Epic and the Scarlet, similar to how they share the Mysterium X sensor. However, the feature set will likely be different between Epic and Scarlet.

All we know as of today is that:
    - Dragon will produce 6k images (final pixel resolution hasn't been officially announced)
    - The Dragon sensor is 30.7mm x 15.8mm
    - Dragon will produce 15+ or 16 stops of captured Dynamic Range
    - Dragon ISO 2000 "looks" like the current MX ISO 800
    - At NAB it was announced that Dragon on Epic could yield a max FPS around 89 fps at 6k.
    - The Epic upgrade to Dragon will be around $6,000 USD
    - The Dragon upgrade begins 4th Quarter 2012 starting with priority to Epic M owners.
    - No official Scarlet X specs have been released for the Dragon update.
    - It has been mentioned that it will be more expensive to upgrade to Dragon on the Scarlet X versus the Epic due to more components needing to be installed.

That's all the news that I can recall off the top of my head.

It's engadget. They can -and should be- ignored. Their high point was a few years ago when they "reviewed" Apple's iPod........without a single mention of sound quality. It's a joke of a website, not to be taken seriously.

    Since there is so much talk about the unnamed “Image Circle”, I thought I take a stab at it. This is just a GUESS, but this what I think it will be the “Ultimate Image Circle” for the 6K Dragon Sensor, (or at least in the Ballpark) I’ve put it down so we can check-it against whatever Jim publishes, when he does. Here are the calculations;

    (28.35*28.35)+(15.37*15.37) √1039.96 = 32.25 Ø

Is interesting, my guess again for the two new Angenieux Zooms fit within the margin of error (of the guess for both the Angenieux and the 6K Dragon Sensor).

    Thales Angenieux Optimo 28 mm X 340 mm - Zoom Ratio: 12X - Focal Length: 28 mm X 340 mm Aperture: f/2.9 – T3.2 - MOD: 4 ft - 0.5 in – 1.23 m Internal Focus: Yes Image Coverage: S35+: 31.4 mm diagonal according to Angenieux (1.16 Extender - 34.8 Ø MY GUESS)

    Thales Angenieux Optimo 19.5 mm X 94 mm - Zoom Ratio: 4.7X - Focal Length: 19.5 mm X 94 mm Aperture: f/2.4 – T2.6 - MOD: 2 ft - 0.5 in – 0.62 m Internal Focus: Yes Image Coverage: S35+: 31.4 mm diagonal according to Angenieux Weight (approx.): 12.3 lbs – 5.6 kg Length: 335 mm (PL) 330 mm (Panavision) Front Diameter: 136 mm – (1.16 Extender - 32.48 Ø MY GUESS)

I’m sure they are well within the margin of error for the Leica Summilux C and the Arri Master Primes. So my number is; 32.25 Ø

    4. Color Gamut. I would put that above resolution and frame rates at this point. Up there with Dynamic range.

Also... rolling shutter? Can we finally put a nail in that coffin?

Read/Reset will be improved on, but I don't think this sensor will have a Global Shutter, atleast not with 16 stops of dynamic range.

But what then, is good enough? Let's say I'm sitting in the middle seat in the theatre. What chip characteristics are necessary such that if they are made better, I wouldn't notice the difference anyway?

Thank you Red for making this an upgrade, not a new Camera! It is so unlike any camera company, but so like RED...even though it's not an Epic, I'm proud to own a RED!
