  1. #1 Monitor out from Recine-X
Apologies if I'm being stupid but I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this anywhere.
What options do I have for proper monitoring out from RedCine-X? Is a Red Rocket card the only choice or are there 3rd party cards/BoBs like the Matrox mini that will work? I realise the Matrox box is only 1920x1080 but I'm on a laptop so the Rocket card is a no go unfortunately. If I could offer our DoP colour accuracy at least he would be very grateful I know.
I know that I can use the Matrox box to give colour accurate output from Avid but that's either off our DNxHD36 offline files or raw via AMA but unless I'm missing something neither of these options give us the ability to tweak the LUT and see the effects in real time, the AMA method only giving us access to the RedColor/RedColor2 and RedGamma/RedGamma2 presets.
    All advice welcomed!

I think RedRocket is your only choice. There are thunderbolt enclosures for full length cards- Sonnet Echo Express Pro and the Magma 3T. You can put RR in there are thunderbolt to your laptop and monitor from the Rocket. Search the forum for more info on these. They have been discussed a bit.

Guess it is not clear exactly what you are asking....you can monitor out of RCX on any monitor. Or are you asking how do you best get color accuracy when using RCX ? in that case, you can use a second color correct monitor---what outputs do you have from your laptop ? What laptop? Many things you CAN do....i have matrox, RR card and mobile solutions i use....but big question is $$$ an object of consequence here? Usually is...even if you have a rocket card, you still need a color accurate monitor. But if this is only for directors monitor---what then are you really asking? do you want to play back at 1/2 to full rez with a light bit of coloring to show the director? or do you really want to do primary and color work on set--if so, then you are talking about adding a lot of $$ equipment.

Sorry not to be clear. What I'm after is the cheapest possible option to give colour accuracy from RedCine on a broadcast monitor using a pre-thunderbolt macbook Pro with an expresscard34 slot (and the apple minidisplay port). The purpose of this would be to enable the DoP to come up with, and tweak, custom LUTs to then use in camera so that the image that he and the Director see on set is as close an approximation of what the DoP will do in the final grade as possible.
We have the monitors available to me but no way of connecting to the laptop at present. While I know that a Matrox mini will give me colour accuracy from Avid it's not worth even that minor expense if it won't give us an output signal from RedCine-X.
