  1. #1 Two Questions
    Hi

If I understand the workflow, i should:

    1. Convert red flies into QT DNxHD using Redcine
    2. Import QT files into MetaCheeter to create ALE
    3. Import ALE into Avid
    4. Batch import the QT using the ALE.

This looks great, but I got two questions: what is the RedAlert software? Should I use it? Is it important to the Avid workflow?

And on the Redcine I got an option to export the red into QT as "4K FILM" or as "RED ONE 4K" what are the diffrences between the two? I think it's not the exact frame size, am i right?

    Thanks

Nope. The MetaCheater workflow is avoids the need to use RedCine. You use RedAlert instead of RedCine. RedAlert creates Quicktimes instantly, without any transcoding. It does this by actually only making tiny Quicktime wrappers that still need the original r3d files to work.

You then import these Quicktime wrappers into MetaCheater, make an ALE and import it into the Avid. You do need to have the Red Quicktime component installed for this to work, and since it is only available for the Mac at the moment, this workflow currently only works on Mac Avids.

Does RedCine pass the timecode through to the quicktimes it creates yet? It didnt use to. Assuming this is fixed then MetaCheater can help if you do want to use RedCine, but people should remember that if you are using RedCine you can actually convert the r3d files to any quicktime codec, you dont have to use Avids DNxHD. The Avid will transcode any quicktime codec into DNxHD itself as it imports the quicktimes. If I was just offline editing the footage and had no Mac Avid available, I would probably use redcine to transcode the footage to whatever codec it could make fastest. Then let the avid handle to transcode to DNxHD.

But the RedAlert workflow is much quicker currently. If you are just offlining at Standard Def you can get import times as low as 2:1 to process all the Red footage and get it in the Avid.

And if RedCine still does not pass through the timecode then MetaCheater won't help.

Redcine pass the timecode for sure.

anytime i tried to use Redalert it just made 3 QT ref that whight around 10kb per file. those are QT ref only right? not QT movie? please explain how i should work with that software.

i thoght that my workflow should be making a 4K QT(DNxHD or Uncompressed) use MetaCheater to create ALE, and import them as SD offline, in the next future (hopefully after NAB) when Avid will have a 2K project, and i will go to the online - open a 2k project, and batch import the
4k files as uncompressed 2K into the Avid.

    am i crazy?

The 3 QT ref files are different size quicktimes of the original footage. You dont have to make all three, you can just make the size you prefer. Even though they are on 10kb, you can treat them like normal quicktimes. Just import them into metacheater and then into an Avid. Are you using a Mac Avid.

I'd be very surprised if Avid released a 2K media composer as soon as NAB, especially since Avid are not attending NAB this year.

You can't make 4K DNxHD Quicktimes. DNxHD is HD in res only (max 1080x1920).

Redcine is used if on Windows since there is no QT codec or RedAlert! for the windows platform. RedCine does pass the timecode and reel ID.

what kind of QT should i usae to create to a 4k maximum resolution file?

Maybe the Avid 1:1x codec at 4k frame size?

is there a codec from the list of QT codecs in Redcine that is real uncompressed?

should my workflow work ? (if Avid will have a 2k project soon as i think thay will)

    Thanks for all the help.

copying response from a similar question:

2K and 4K finishing is done in Avid DS. The workflow would be to use the metadata from the Avid Media Composer back to RedCine and export DPX files. There will be tools to take RedCine XML (in and out) to help faciliate the process coming online in the near future.

It's great to have you part of this forum!
Is Avid in the position to offer RED One work flow classes?
Do you have a contact at Avid that I can call or E-mail as I am setting up RED Boot camps for the summer and would love to include post production work flow
instruction from an Avid work flow specialist.
