  1. #1 X RAID and XSAN 2
Did anyone else notice that with the introduction of XSAN 2 the X RAID product line disappeared from the Apple website? It was there a week ago. Searching the Apple site turns up a link to www.promise.com, a third party provider. At least XSAN 2 supports third party drives where the original did not.

Since Apple has always been way behind (still using 2Gbit fibre and 750 GB drives when everyone else is using 4Gb FC and 1 TB drives) with outrageous pricing, we standardized on G-Tech G-Speed XL 16TB drives with MetaSan for SAN software (64 TB total). I guess we will look at XSAN 2 and see if it really will work (supported) with our G-Tech's.

Someone know what is going on here and what Apple is thinking? Hopefully this does not substantiate the rumors that FCP is being sold off by Apple (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8667), since we are totally committed to FCP and Color at this point. Of course they did announce new iPod Nano pricing under $50, so pro's should not worry.

On the good news front our RED #612 did arrive last week...

    Xraid is EOL.
Promise VTrack is the new Apple endorsed and recommended storage.
G-Tech G-Speed XL we use - it has been GREAT for us.
Apple in NOT selling off ProApps / FCP - that is 1000% FUD.

I saw it on their website when I looked two days ago but it's gone now.

Not a promising start; the "buy now" link won't open, at least not with Safari.

We're expecting a conference call with Apple sometime today to discover the full implications of this development; we're rather directly affected since we are adding seats and storage to our Xsan. As I've reported, we've been told not to attempt to add a Leopard client to the existing Xsan, but now there's a new sheriff in town...

I don't as yet know how it affects our support agreements with Apple.

Don't know if the rug is being pulled out from under us or if we've being offered a comfortable club chair.

I hope the "House of Games" advice does not apply, "Don't trust nobody."

    Film at eleven...

Thanks for the updates. Interested to hear what Apple tells you Tobeorx.

I'm really confused about Apple dropping the XRaid... I guess they just didn't feel it necessary to develop a very important companion product to their own Xserves? Whatever... They were badly in need of an update and grossly overpriced anyway.

    XSan2 looks promising.

All things hard drives - raids, etc. - it's just a big race to the bottom. Apple is very SMART to stay out of that game.

Hey, this is the same Promise Tech. that makes the FastTrack RAID controllers! That's a realy good thing in my book. I lost my 5 year old Avid a couple months ago. Was running a Promise FastTrack IDE raid card all that time with not one problem. Finally had one of the IBM drives go... but the Promise is still ready for action. Good company.

conflicting thoughts from people on Primise.. some say they have had really bad support. And it states on Apples site.. suppport for the raid is not through them but the 3rd party..

So are they going to be pointing fingers at each other when ya san breaks??
