Electronic back focus tool and Graeme focus

I was thinking about easy way to adjust back focus and without 1:1 zoom in the EVF it is kind of tricky job.

However if Graeme focus could have “back focus mode” to recognize the sharp few inches wide, black on white vertical line perfectly in focus and show it or sound it in some distinctive way would be a nice feature.

Maybe it already has this ability?

Anybody tried to put the thick vertical black line few feet away and see how Graeme focus tool reacts to it?

Must be very easy to create an algorithm that will detect the bang on focus with one or two pixels accuracy.

This seems like a much better use for the focus assist to me! Has anyone ever actually used it on a real shoot?

When is 1:1 focus coming? I can't believe it isn't available yet. I assumed it was already working. No wonder shots are soft 9 times out of 10. Even my HV20 has 1:1.

I think that a lot of shots are soft because no sharpening has been applied. Every camera out there sharpens and it make a significant difference in the look. Also, any camera or actor motion will be blurred... so tack sharp like a 35mm SLR under strobes is tough to get.

1:1 focusing is helpful in setting marks OR focusing on stationary items so it'll be nice, but the JVC/Sony focus assist is superior for anything else. Or use a killer EVF - which RED apparently has.

Hire a different AC. The tools we're talking about here should only affect about 5 times out of 100.

I have to agree with the beginning of this post. It's indeed tricky to set the back focus on a 720P output or without a 1:1 focus...

The RAW footage that we see here posted is 9 out of 10 not processed.
First of all looks milky white, second not sharpen.

Since milky look is so obvious we all push the colors just so we can watch it.
It is not the case with sharpness though.
We know that we can push sharpness but we don’t do it just to watch a clip posted here but if we see the milky white clip than I can’t even watch it without pushing it a bit.

I was playing with RED RAW footage quite a lot recently and believe me you can make it sharp and highly detailed.

I took Linnunlaulu_walk_r3d posted here and after correcting colors I was bit to lazy to go back and correct sharpness since the sharpness doesn’t work yet properly on build 82 so I had to take it to AE or AP. I wanted to check Graeme suggestion for scaling so this time I decided to do the scaling and sharpness correction.
What a difference it makes if you scale and sharpen the clip!
Different algorithms give drastically different effects though.

Then I loaded some RAW clips from Canon and surprise surprise, can’t push it to look as good as Linnunlaulu_walk_r3d. Well, maybe sharpening and scaling from 4K to 2K does the whole difference or Graeme insistence to relay on linear smooth low pass corrected RAW data even if it doesn’t look good makes all the difference.

Now I see the challenge with the sharpen button on REDCINE, it is not just sharpen and done, this button should have advanced preset options since different clips needs different sharpen process.

I've been running tape on everything, next best "cheap" trick is using Nikon Laser viewfinder..... I personally use the focus assist much like the HVX-200's to check but that only gets my 90% there.
