For handheld shooting, I'd envisage shooting with the Flash unit bolted on the camera, with maybe one or two rails on back for the batteries (add on the holder) , grip handle on top. Put a lightweight mattebox on the lens and you're ready. For the cherry on the top, you can attach the EVF and/or LCD to the bridge on the top of the camera (still to be confirmed as part of the camera accessories). Since the bridge was Jim's idea ? and was rendered, it shouldn't be too hard to convince 'em :)

All of these can be purchased individually.

Since the battery and drive were moved off the camera you've got an exponential increase in capacity (320GB is amazing). A holder, grip, arm, and a couple rails to purchase are a very easy purchase, considering...modularity will lead to combinations we've not even considered yet

I'm just imagining a steadi setup with the camera + lens, LCD and either have the camera mounted with a FLASH unit or have the RED RAM/DRIVE clipped to the operator's belt or vest along with the battery. For those shooting with Nikon glass, a mattebox isn't always something to consider either. Use typical hoods or snoots and screw-on filters. RED can be pretty minimal.

For a great affordable matt box, check out the LEE wide angle filter kit. It works great with nikon lenses and snaps on and off very quickly.

If someone does not order the Red erector sets...what are the options for battery and Red Drive mounting? Do you just have to bolt it to the top of the camera or fab out your own mount?

Oh come on. If you're really contemplating getting the red camera and not paying for any accessories then maybe you should rethink the whole purchase.

On second thought. Go ahead and just buy the body and the LCD screen. Then when you realize that you really do want some accessories you can wait until all of the 1,400 some-odd reservations are fulfilled. I guess some people didn't learn from the whole "I don't need to buy P2 cards when i get the HVX" thing.

Redrock will release a verrry nice Arri-like light weight mattebox soon for $500. I've gotten to play with it and it seems to be the ticket for Nikon/Red owners. Not to mention their wirless follow focus with 3 servo ports and programable hard stops for only $500 as well.

RED TEAM, forgive the dumb question here, and kudos for all the product pricing announcements and ultra-generous Jim stuff and all, and sorry if this has already been asked/answered, but I was wondering . . .

For an ultra-stripped RED ONE configuration (minimum weight/size), if you want to use RED sans any type of "rail" is there any way to mount the V-lock battery mount onto the RED body itself? If not, could a V-lock battery mount be easily mounted somehow, perhaps via the base plate? I mean aside from running a 12V cable down to a battery located somewhere off-camera, (which I want to avoid).

Let me re-phrase the question (now that I've gone back and viewed the early renders on the RED.com photo tour). Is top-mounting of the V-lock still possible? According to the earlier render, this would've been possible, but with the necessary "top rail" attached.

Duh . . . I'm getting up to speed pretty slowly here (been in bed for two days with a cold). So, that brick-sized box, before the brick on the back of the rail is the 320GB storage HDD, (I mistakenly had thought the HDD was "clipped" into the side of th camera body's side), yes?

Also, Steadicams typically fly a camera without its own brick. The camera is powered by a cable, powered by the sled's main power (in my case, Anton Bauer ProPak14s). So, for Steadicam operation, at least, the rail would be superfluous, other than the fact that it's needed to house the HDD?

Yes, that's right the RED Drive 320 GB unit is external and is pictured mounted next to the battery.

For steadicam I'm not sure if you don't Need the rail....

Do people ever use MB or filters when flying? Like out doors in the daylight?
