Hoping to make it financialy until Jan.21-24 and join the RED family/cult/believers i realized i don't know if the $17500 and a lens set will be enough for me to start shooting stuff when they arrive.

I am sure this information is somewhere burried around the 3 basic RED forums but couldn't find it here or red.com.

I understand there will be an HD lcd monitor in the package but not sure about batteries or (more importantly) storage mediums. Will RED ship with a REDFLASH or REDDRIVE? Will we have to add those to the cost?

Also, will the lcd monitor be mountable on the main RED body somehow or will we need the REDCAGE or something else for that?

The LCD will be camera mountable, AFAIK the camera will come with one battery. You will still need to buy either a RedDrive or a RedFlash (Both under 1K) and probably the redrail to mount it all to.

    - REDDRIVE (mini-raid) is said to cost under $1000 (for 320GB)
    - REDFLASH also separate (32 - 128GB - starts at for under $1000)
    - unclear if REDFLASH port will ship with camera
    - REDCINE software said to be free for reservation holders (to change?)
    - batteries - don't know.
    - LCD monitor said to mount anywhere, but I would at least try to buy that little handle which has extra mounting points.

    Lots of info here:

Well, I may be opening myself up to some major ridicule but here is my half-assed Red budget. Many, many, many guesses and assumptions follow.

For clarity (and self-preservation) all (silly) RED-assumptions are in RED.

    TIER 1
    ________
    $17,500 - RED ONE -
    $1,750 - RED RAIL -
    $250 - RED HANDLE -
    $2000 - 2X RED DRIVE -
    $1500 - Shipping & Customs from USA
    $750 - RED NIKON LENS MOUNT -
    $2,500 - NIKOR LENSES - (Nikon 17-35mm = $1,959 Canadian)
    $1000 - MATTE BOX / FILTERS -
    $1250 - BATTERIES -
    $1250 - Tripod
    $500 - Camera Bag & Raincover
$750 - Mic and cables (mixer?)
    __________
    $31 000 - Tier 1 Total (US$)
    __________

    TIER 2
    _____________
    $9,500 - RED ZOOM
$750 - Red Rock Follow Focus
$1000 - RED FLASH or 3rd RED DRIVE
    $1000 - RED CAGE
    $2,500 - RED EVF
    $750 - Shipping & Customs from USA
    ____________
    $15 500 - Tier 2 Total (US$)
    __________

    TOTAL TIER 1 + 2
    ____________
    $46 500 - Tier 1 & 2 Total (US$)
    __________

If anyone feels like correcting any of the above numbers expect to get one of two responses:

    1.) "Thank God :) "
    2.) "Sucks :( "

And yes, I plan to go second-hand on some things. Thanks in advance.

    My interpretation on the numbers are a little different;

$250 - RED NIKON LENS MOUNT (I'd hate to pay $750 for a lens mount)
$5000 - Tripod - Oconnor 1030HD (Of all the things you'd buy you wouldn't want to go cheap on the tripod. Red may push into the 18 lb. range)

As for the Red Rock Follow Focus, I own one and would sadly have to say, it just doesn't cut it based on the amount of play it has on its gear. I would strongly recommend picking up a Chrosziel follow focus, costs around $1,500 but no play, just smooth controlled reliability.

The Red Rock Follow Focus play is now fixed in all new devices shipped and even the old ones can be fixed - more or less - easily.

We got an $2k Arri follow focus because we also considered the Red Rock Follow Focus unusable but after the fix it works equally well.

The Red Rock lens gears also work with the Arri follow focus btw.

Cool, wasn't aware of an upgrade to the internals of the RR Follow Focus, I'll have to check into that, thanks! :)
