Okay, so how do I successfully connect the support ring of the Red 300mm to the Red universal mount? They miss each other by like an inch or more.

What is the preferred method? It seems silly for Red to sell me a 300mm lens that has a lens support ring, and a universal mount, that then don't work together.

    Am I missing something?

    Shawn,
I have not seen the 300mm in person but I suspect it was designed to be used with an Arri low support, like the LS-9. It sticks up a bit more and has adjustable height and centering on the attachment screw.
I think the Red universal mount is designed intentionally low-profile to allow accessories to be mounted but to stay out of the was as much as possible...
In the meantime, I bet a short stack of stainless 3/8" washers would be OK.
    Cheers,
    Harry

    Shawn,

There will eventually be another little piece manufactured to fit that space between the RED universal mount and the 300 screw ring. When I got my 300 in August I mounted it and found the same thing you did. My quick and inexpensive solution was a 2" long black bolt that I bought at a hardware store for $1.00 that I screw up through the RED universal mount and into the screw receptacle on the RED 300 lens support collar. The gap the screw spans is actually a little over 1". This fix is strong and looks fine.

At times I have also supported my RED 300 with the Fujinon plate from my Fujinon HA22x7.3 HD EFP/ENG zoom, which screws right into the RED 300 screw support, and I've also supported the 300 with a combo of my ET ARRI V plate, ET bridge plate (I have the 15mm and 19mm), and either 15mm rods or 19mm rods, than the appropriate universal mount under the lens. If I use 15mm rods, I have an ARRI mount with screw that screws into the lens, If I use the 19mm rods, I use the RED universal plate and screw set up I described above.

Hope this helps. BTW...I think you'll love the images you get from the RED 300. It is a crisp lens...very nice.

Hehe... Not the RED 300mm, but same deal. (I've made myself something better since this was taken)

. . . and paint the edges RED. Tres Chic!

You can also get a spacer at a hardware store. EDIT: I suppose Gibby's idea of just screwing it in and letting the bolt hold it in place would be sufficient too.
