There's been a lot of brouhaha over Scarlet having a fixed lens, but I haven't yet heard any questions or suggestions raised about the actual operation of the lens - and with the DOF of a 2/3" sensor and professional applications in mind, I personally would have thought that to be a bigger issue.
So my question is this: can we expect manual iris, focus and zoom rings (with hard stops) on Scarlet's lens barrel? If space is too tight to allow all three control on the barrel itself, I could live (if a little unhappily) with the iris and zoom controls on the camera body. But a focus ring with hard stops and a distance scale on the lens barrel really is a necessity for my shooting - I need to be able to pull focus accurately and confidently (something servo lens controls do not allow). |

Valid question. After Jim clarified the focal length of the lens the only thing that questions me are the lens control. I also hope for three rings, maybe two on the lens barrel. And hard stops would indeed be welcome. I can live with the fixed lens as long as I can control it properly.
But I have faith that Jim will understand this and take care of it. |

Funny, I just registered to ask this very question. I concur that three rings, all with hard stops, would be ideal. At the very least, I want hard stops on the focus ring. This could be the only dealbreaker for me... ergonomics are important, after all. Supporting full auto modes is one thing; I just don't want manual control to be very difficult in order to facilitate the auto users.
Anyone at Red able to comment on the plans for this at the moment? |

Full manual focus ring is a must have, definitely.
All other controls can be servo or whatever.

ideally it should be possible to have the three rings so you could hook it up to the standards of follow focus gears
but as red is progressive, it would be cool if those rings could be disengaged and be run on full automatic (selectively of course) and even better if it is possible to run all three from digital external devices, so that it can be controlled from a remote of some sort or a computer

While physically manipulatable rings for focus, zoom and iris are REALLY important, another thing to remember is that the Scarlet talk also includes WiFi control and it would only make sense to have the lens control as a subset of that.
I would think that a wireless follow focus wheel would be one of the first Scarlet accessories - hopefully available when the camera ships. And of course one wireless follow focus (would that be a WiFiFoFo?) would work both lenses when two Scarlets are jam synced for 3D work. Sweeeeeet. |

Wireless Follow Focus would be very nice. They might go for a Nintendo Wii like control. The Scarlet in one hand and the wireless controls in the other hand (google Wii Nun-chuk). If they have a wireless LANC like controller with wheels for focus, iris and a zoom rocker I think it could work very well. You can than either control it yourselves or someone else can do it.
