Default 48 Film Festival short shot on Build 16

This weekend the other Brooklyn Clay (Haskell) and I, Clay (Harper) made a short film for the 48 hour Film Festival with Haskell as director and me (Harper/Lordnumberzero) as DP. Special thanks goes out to Gaffer Phil Gerke who came down from Portland to help out and made a tiny lighting kit go a long way.

We had limited lighting and grip, just a handful of arri fresnels and 4 rifa lights of various sizes. Rated the day interiors and exteriors at 320 and used an ND9 and polarizer outside. Rated the dusk and night shots at 640.

Anyway, Build 16 kicks major ass. The noise is so reduced it's like night and day from the old builds. All major complaints I had against noise in low exposures have been resolved and I am a happy man. Redspace is the JAM! Your shots open up looking great and just a little tweaking and things look amazing. Red has 100% delivered on its promise and more although I have to ask: what the fuck is rocketio_playback error?

I'd love to hear how you did post. I'm considering doing the 48hour project here in Portland, OR for the primary purpose of proving that Red can do fast turnaround time (there's an unhealthy dose of FUD about this issue here).

My tentative plan, since the 48hour project is SD only, is to downconvert everything to 1k and edit away and output an SD from that. Then after the project do a Crimson conform back to 2k for a better version.

Well, the post didn't work out so great. We just loaded the proxies into FCP and threw a little color correction on them but noticed much too late that there was some loss of framerate in playback resulting in some jagged motion. I think this is probably gonna get resolved when the code for build 16 gets optimized. I have had success grading proxies with the older builds. Fortunately, our theme was sci-fi and the weird look sorta serves the story.

BTW, I really liked your Aeteas project. Many rad choices.

I think you did a great job with the lighting, doesn't look forced to me.

Looks really good man. Can't wait to see the finished project. Those 48hr Film Festivals are a lot of fun.

If your in New York City them swing by the Sunshine theatre on Houston at 9pm tomorrow (thursday 26th) the film will be screen but unfortunately in standard definition, does not justice to build 16.

The camera had no hic-ups beside 1080p playback (just keep it on 720 for now) other then that build 16 was very stable to shoot with but the proxies seem to be slow on playback in post which Jim had mentioned something about this in regards to 16 and that they were working it out.

Thanks to the entire crew for coming out last weekend, served as a great test for build 16 and RED 1781. Phil Gerke is a team player, thats all I have to say....it was a blast.

RADICAL..

It seems like the Red + FCP would be most conducive for this quick turnaround..

You could literally have some grab your CF, hand it to the editor and begin chopping..

Production & Post merged into one..
