I am a student at the Toronto Film School about to start pre-production on my final project. I am considering renting a red cam for my shoot. If I decide to shoot in 4k, how much hard drive storage would I need for 2 hours of footage?

I don't mean to be rude man but do a little reading on this board and you find most if not all of your answers. But a 500GB drive would be good for two hours of 4K footage.

I'm not sure if Drew's numbers just take into account the R3D files or not. If you're only planning on using the Quicktime proxies as your online files in the end then you should be fine. Just know that if you are gonna be outputting anything from RedCine like DPXs, TIFFs, or 2K Quicktimes then your space required is going to be a lot more than just what it takes to store the R3D files.

If you are on a Mac, and plan to use FCP to edit the proxy files before onlining the footage to ProRes 1080p via something like the Crimson Workflow:
1) use this http://red.glanzunion.de/ to work out how much storage space you need. 2) Double it, and add another quarter. You will always need a backup copy, plus when you finish/color correct you will need to convert the R3D's, which will also takes up space. That's what I do.

It's true, you can find almost any info you're looking for, already well discussed on this forum in some thread or another, but it still takes a few well known key-words to find that niche info sometimes. I mean look what's posted here in #5 by Mr. Watkins: A RED Footage to GB converter! I always leave impressed, even when I get kicked out the door by the bouncers!

Thank you for the additional info. Truthfully I have never seen the camera so this is all new to me. All I know is the RED is the future and I would like to stand out ahead of the pack when I'm looking for a job.
