Default RED and Gumball 3000, and yoga

This saturday, August 9th at the fairmont hotel in beautiful san francisco, ca, 120 exotics, prototypes and concept cars will be tearing out of there on a 6000 mile journey across the country....

After mulling it over for...less than a second I figured what better time to test our recently Build 16-anized RED

I have STRIPPED our rig to be as "comfortable" as it can be handheld, but something still tells me that no matter how many pushups I do I will still come home with DEAD tired arms, har har (unfortunatly 4 8GB CF cards + no data wrangler = RED raid / battery mount...)

I have heard in the past of some great...yes I am actually going there...yoga techniques to loosen up the back and arms, any suggestions? Also any handheld shooters let me know what techniques you've used to help prepare for a half day - days worth of handheld shooting with the RED. Thanks all in advance and hope at least some can make it!

I can't say I have any tips for you as far as going hand held... But, what time are you shooting on the 9th? I don't live too far away and was thinking of going up there, maybe I could do some data wrangling to lighten up your rig?

Think lower-back support more then Your arms... And don't do any massage or "loosening" exercise the day before the shoot - it will kill You the next day... I am shooting handheld this Sunday with TWO Red Ones for stereo project. If that is not enough to kill my back - the rig will have two Kenyon gyros... My back hurts just thinking about it... :)

One quick question to pose to the RED masses, how about putting the RED raid / drive cable in padded backpack? My camera bag has many padded pockets for SLR cameras, laptops, cables, hard drives, etc, and at least 2 are perfect sizes, but just in terms of heat, safety of equipment, etc.

Too I found out a few favors may be pulled so instead of just using a 24mm ultra prime (or 30mm, we have a full set of 12, just trying to get somthing that will really be nice for those up close engine bay shots, but good at watching the cars...leave in an expedited fashion :) ), the 18-50mm may come into play.

Phillip,
Well I can't say no to something like that! Lol, but I may not have a laptop there, as the only gear thats coming with will be all carried, most likely by me. I was thinkin bout heading over there around 9 to make sure to find a good, close parking spot given parking around the event will most likely be sparce (and I don't really think a 1st gen mini cooper s is exactly an exotic...).

Come next week, there should be some interesting footage of cars that I've only seen through glass. :usd:

If you'd like, I can see if I can make it. I would know tomorrow mid day. I have a macbook pro and a macbook(smaller, might be easier to get it). I also have an HVX200, my companies RED is out on a shoot right now.

I also have a 5d with some l glass, I was going to go up to take pictures, but helping shoot with a RED sounds like way more fun!

Do you know when about you'd be done? I'm not sure when the cars drive off...

:
Chrystler ME Four Twelve
STOKED is hte name of hte game for tomorrow! But I'll be there from 9 AM - 3 most likely is the amount of time I'll be there. I have the two drives set up at 4k (mainly just tests, redcode 28, 36), and the cards set up for various shots (hoping to do some slowmo for when the cars leave, get a good $100,000 burnout in slowmo :w00t) But yea come on down for it whenever's good for you, I'll be there from at least 9 AM - 3 PM. Provided I don't run out of RED bull :weight_lift:

It looks like I won't be able to make it. I had a pretty big 3d animated project dropped on my plate with a very unreasonable, I mean short, timeline. If I'm feeling irresponsible when I get up in the morning, I might come... Right now though, it isn't looking good.

I hope you get some good footage! Please post it somewhere! I'd love to see it!

I shot the Gumball 3000 2 years ago... we went right across Europe, Thailand and the US in 8 days (with my buddies at Chrome!) was the most insane shoot I've ever been on, bar none. It was hard enough with my Steadicam and a lowly DSR450, can't imagine the logistics/data wrangling of shooting the rally with a RED! I've got so many good memories of that job; being dumped with no passport on the street in Thailand, my producer falling asleep on the floor at the Hard Rock Cafe in Vegas, street racing in a Bently in Serbia, shooting out of the back of a Land Rover at the salt flats, parties on specially chartered Iceland Air flights, 8 days maybe 2/3 hours sleep per night, went backwards around the world- crossed the international date line, brilliant!

(shamless plug) There are a couple of shots still on my showreel:
