The RED is something very... very special.
I am in the middle of doing some RED portable production/post production tests. I was in Las Vegas '06 the day they announced the camera. RED two years later has developed the largest leap in Independant film making since Mini-DV. RED does not get enough credit for not only developing a reliable camera but some truly innovative software. I have been reading the REDuser.net forums for the last month and I have no idea why there are people complaining about workflow. 2 Years ago no one believed any of this was possible. And now with just some processing time you can do anything and everything with 4K. (just because the workflow isn't native yet doesn't mean it doesn't work.) Last week we shot footage. "On set playback/analyzation of WAVELET COMPRESSED RAW 4K footage on a portable laptop with no RAID" (If you said that statement 2 years ago to anyone they would have said impossible....) The next 2 years is going to be the best years of INDEPENDENT filmmaking and RED+FCS will be the cause. It levels the field. Jim... Thank You RED programmers... Thank you RED camera... Thank you You have given me a story to tell my grandchildren. -Morgan Gross www.morgangross.com STILL LINK http://www.morgangross.com/morgangro...ightScurve.jpg |

I am sure every single red owner feels like this even when they bitch.
I think the screaming is just meant to keep the fires stoked! |

Morgan,
Great post. There is an elegance to the design of the RED workflow and implementation is going through growing pains. They are way ahead of the game in terms of thinking and now it's the gruntwork of making all feel seamless. The boards are great: last week people were posting comments and problems about build fifteen about 20 minutes after it was available for download. That is good and bad because it can fuel speculation, but it also gets problems solved faster. RED evokes passion and that is also very cool. People get on here and can get very fired up about what is going on with RED. I think it is because the customers have taken ownership of the idea and they feel strongly about the direction. That can also create havoc or solve problems. At the end of the day, could you have imagined this with SONY, Panasonic, Ikegami, Dalsa, SI or any other camera. It's fresh and it's got people full of piss and vinegar at a time when business models are changing drastically. A year from now we'll be saying, "yeah, I cut the whole thing from the proxies and did a DI at this place or that place". Until then, I have to take a break from REDUSER to write SCRIPTS instead of POSTS and put my camera through initial tests later this week. Fun. I echo the thanks to Jim, and team. David

Nice.
RED is nothing less than a revolution. Make no mistake. The pricing and format make this as revolutionary as DV was. The whole workflow will come in time and blow us all away no doubt. Look at the players. I'm doing it now in FCP 6.0.2. It's doable in 2K ProRes 4:2:2 today in that software with a Kona 3. it's nicer than any HD I've ever worked with. 4k can be done too in other software. 4k and it's ability to be cropped to any format size, all done in video systems and codecs and formats du jour is the future. RED is leading the top down. Jerry |

Gerry,
Well said. With the wealth of post experience you bring here people should really be paying attention. David
