RED isn't screwing around in 2018. Not one bit.

As someone knee deep in the middle of a VR project, i'm not totally sure what this really means. VR is such an utter pain, especially stereo 360. Stitching, fixing, and all that is very time consuming but the one consistent thing is that VR projects are usually huge DOF and larger sensors aren't so good at that. So i am guessing that the sensor in the hydrogen is the target.

FB are also working with other camera manufacturers.

For hydrogen i am assuming that a stereo pair of cameras would enable some depth reconstruction and they mention a line about that. You can use left/right with disparity maps to regenerate the depth of the scene but it's never that accurate either. There is latitude for better code in that area.

But it's very much a empty article in terms of content.

So i'm interested in finding out what it *really* means - i mean Red were never into VR, isn't that the point of Hydrogen - not VR.

    cheers
    Paul

This is super exciting, I don't believe Hydrogen is in the mix for this specific announcement based on the session at F8 yesterday.

Man I sure hope this is about volume/mesh capture and not just 360deg video. All 360 and 360+3D video capture and delivery I've seen is so flawed I think it does a huge disservice to public perception of VR and therefore adoption of VR technology. 360 vr seems to me to be something that needs to be put on the back burner for a decade until they can figure out how to shoot and distribute it effectively or augment it properly with CG VR.
