  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I shot my brother in law in the dirt pit.

Thanks for the kind comments. I shot it hand held with the epic and hawks. So Bob is right there is no moco involved.

The "double take trick" is simply some retimed camera projections. So 3D tracked the take as a pan/tilt/roll and then projected the same take back ontop if itself with and offset. So no need to crop in or such as long as the original take has the rider completely in frame it's very possible to add in as many instances as wanted. The only limitation is if there is a lot of paralax in the scenery then it of course will not match up. But I only used the clutch and no tripod / labda head or such the little offsets that occur form having it hand held is quite easy to even out but a nodal head would occurse make the masking and such a bit easer since then I could have used more accurate difference matting etc.

Also the hawks are pretty far from being rectilinear so it's off course a bit easier to use lenses that are more mathematically correct.. but then on the other hand I would not look the same, as I love the combo of slomo and wide anamorphics and shooting towards the sunset. Such setup even makes the scrappiest dirt lot look cool :)

The double thing was actually one of two tests we done for another project. Here is a link to that other test I think that one kind of shows more whats going on... Even though the 3D track is a bit weak in this one, as I did not bother to run it trough syntheyes and just auto tracked in flame.. so a bit of jitter, but nothing that could not be dealt with.

We graded and comped the whole Bike thing in flame in full 4k. The Seiki screen is ordered and on it's way, should get it in a few days, can't wait to see how things like this looks in 3840pixels wide.

I think this a rebranded sekie if you sant to get it. fr.o.m. A swedish rebeller

Also Robert that is runnning in the test have à voice that sounds like leif gw persson:)

Thanks Joel, Yes thats the one I'm getting. Luckily I saw your post about it some place so I did not have to order from the states.

Let us know how it works out. Will you use a BMD extreme 4k to drive it or redray player.

Great work - thanks for sharing Björn!

I was hoping I can drive it from a mac book pro. TB to HDMI port and play of a Lacie TB Raid... will see how that goes. Do not feel like buying the BMD extreme and the redray kind of seem to be a discontinued product.

Very cool. This technique was often used in Norman McLaren short films. He studied at the Glasgow school of Art and subsequently came back to Canada where he created many award winning films for the Canadian National Film Board.

I have seen his academy award winning "Neighbors" it's really cool for being back then all made with tape an scissors and all. It's a bit more challenging to win the same award today I think :)

He likes to ride his bike and I very much enjoyed shooting him :)

Hey man ! Great work !
I have done similar on a moco many times. But to do the effect with 3d tracking and difference matts etc and pull it off as well as you did is really cool.
Ive always thought about it, but never thought it would be good enough knowing that there is a lot of lens distortion issue that would trip you up.
Well done Man !

Mark,

Yes, double takes are possible with moco but not like this which is the same take with an offset in time and/or speed. This can only be done with 3D camera projected imagery.

As long as we know the lens (form shooting a grid or such and also preferably a gray plate) we can get around the lens distortion and possible vinjetting etc. But for this one we did none such things, and considering it was the Hawk -C's (that are not really known to be "straight shooters" and quite far from rectilinear) I can pretty much assure it works with any prime glass.

Today we also scripted for Nuke cameras so we can vari speed the camera projections within a take... If the double take stuff showed above is a bit of a mind bug then this vari speed stuff is a true brain F#€€%K basically we can then plates running in and out of them selves in a really cool fluid way, also make really odd tails behind people etc. So please Mark pitch this on your next cool car commercial or such and then we can do some across the globe collaboration :)

The thing is with this method we can also stitch any two plates together just as good as a pan tilt moco. Just as long as what ever is wanted to show from the two plates are in frame. In other words you need to not crop of any part of your subject in plate two...
